Odd Hieroglyph
Hi, I've come across a glyph I do not recognise. http://www.eramm.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/images/crosses.jpg It could be a variant of S166 and is a lady's name - anyone any ideas? Kind regards, Ned
Hi Serge, The part of the inscription reads 'ḥmt.f nb.t pr.f nḏt X m3ʕt ḫrw' where this is X. It can be found at http://www.eramm.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Yshemrai.jpg Kind regards Ned
Hi Serge, The glyph can be viewed here: http://www.eramm.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Yshemrai.jpg The stele is in Durham Oriental Museum
The Lady's name seems to begin 'Ndjet...' Ned
There's a word nḏ.t "flour", and the signs could possibly be U31 (I must admit that the hieratic shape of the sign, which I looked at, was a bit far from the sign you have here... if it"s indeed U31, it's really a mix between the hieroglyphic shape and the hieratic one).
In this case, U31 being described by Gardiner as a baker's instrument, the name of the mother might be something like "Miller" ? (or, more appropriately, "Grinder" ?).

Thanks Serge, Your suggestion does make sense - even if calling a woman 'grinder' in English would get you a slap round the face! Ned
Have you got a photo with the sign in context ? it might help. I would think of U31 also...
Sorry for taking so much time publishing your message..
